THE university of Zululand is to be shut down today (Thursday) by protest action, announced the SA Students Congress (Sasco), Wednesday.
SASCO secretary-general Lazola Ndamase told the press they will engage in protest action demanding free education at nine universities across the country, including Unizulu. He said it will culminate in 1000 students marching to national parliament on Friday.
Ndamase said thousands of students have been refused entry to institutions of higher education either because they owe fees to these institutions or were unable to pay registration fees.
POLITICAL violence has marred the University of Zululand in the run-up to student representative council (SRC) elections taking place today (Thursday) at the KwaDlangezwa campus.
THE ANC has condemned the vandalism which caused millions of rands damage to a Zululand tertiary institution but says management of Unizulu should also accept some of the blame.
The estimated damage at the university is expected to be more than R5-million. A number of buildings were burnt down and others had windows smashed, last week Tuesday.
