Although East Griqualand is quite far removed from the new stadiums and all that goes with large match euphoria – such as the soccer world cup, this by no way means that there is less support for our national soccer side – Bafana-bafana here in East Griqualand. Yes, it is true that Bafana-bafana has had to endure many hurdles and some of them were of their own making in the build-up to this momentous occasion. The mere fact that our team will take part in a Fifa world cup is both an exciting and historical occasion.
Part of the enjoyment is the build-up to the world cup as well as giving all the support we can to our team. Initiatives such as the signing of the National team jersey on Thursday 5th February when the ´Unite Mzanzi Unite truck tour´ will stop over in Kokstad for a few hours will no doubt see many people keen to show their support. From all of us we wish Bafana-bafana all the best – they´re certainly going to need it.
DESPITE the controversy that erupted over the Sisonke Public Viewing Area (PVA), Kokstad managed to host a successful local event. Last week, the East Griqualand Fever carried a story about wasteful expenditures following a squabble over which area between Kokstad and Ixopo would play host to the FIFA World Cup PVA.
AN exciting 2010 Siyangqoba Tournament hosted by Umzimkhulu Municipality on Saturday last week, featured soccer teams from all over Umzimkhulu and included traditional dancers, Isicathamiya, gospel musicians, Umbhaqanga and Kwaito stars. The aim of the tournament was to encourage support and create a buzz for the upcoming FIFA World Cup on their home soil, as Umzimkhulu will, unfortunately, not be hosting any of the World Cup matches, due to the lack of facilities.
I am not a football fanatic and I am clueless about what happens on the field. As a result, this may be my first and last football column because I dont have a football background, but as the saying goes, feel it, it is here.
