UMZIMKULU, which in the past was dubbed as a criminal hotspot with the local police dragging feet to arrest them is gradually becoming a peaceful area.
This was said by the Umzimkhulu Mayor, Bheki Dzanibe, when he commend the town’s police for their good work since the station commander, Superintendent Ralph Ruiters, took over the reins. “We know for a fact that the area has been notorious because of the serious criminal activities that were taking place in the area. But now that is a thing of the past,” said Dzanibe, when delivering his speech during the National Police Day event held in the area last week.
He referred to the management of police saying it has made a huge change. “We don’t say there is no crime here, but when it is committed, our police definitely arrest them.”
He also referred to the recent serious cases, which include murder and rape, where all the suspects linked to these crimes were thrown behind bars - where they belong. “I am very impressed by the visibility of police in every corner, 24 hours a day,” said the Mayor. He added that the police are now playing a huge role in participating in municipal programmes like integrated development plan (IDP), making it easy to incorporate their systems in the municipal programmes. He said police forums are also active.
In the past, the Bhacaland (Umzikhulu) hit the headlines as criminals seem to take over control, committing serious crimes that left the community indoors quivering with fear. Station commander, Superintendent Ralph Ruiters said they will always attempt to do their best to serve the community.
