Left to right Pennington Ratepayers Association members Fred Stevenson, Doug Bernhard and Andy Day, preparing street name signs for repainting.

by Seton Thompson
05 February 2010

THE Pennington Ratepayers’ Association has approached the Umdoni Municipality with an offer to help freshen up the street name signs in its area. The Municipality has provided the paint and Pennington RPA the painters.
“This is not our first effort at co-operating. Last week, we cut back the verges and cleaned up around the railway line and the Council fetched the resulting garden refuse. The concept seems to be working well and we will look to extend it to other activities”, said chairman Fred Stevenson. “We have a fair number of members who have a bit of spare time and are useful with their hands. The street signs are one of the more frequent gripes in towns like Pennington – everybody from holiday-makers to the police and delivery businesses needs them so it’s in our own interests to keep them in shape”.

Terminology and methodology causes confusion

Briefing your ratepayers and allowing them the opportunity to challenge and comment is excellent relationship-building for a municipality but its usefulness clearly depends upon the quality of the communication and the understanding of the ratepayers.

Ratepayers rattle the sabre over rates

It seems that the rates imbroglio could be the feature of contention between ratepayers and the Umdoni Municipality in 2010 if early broadsides from ratepayers associations and residents are anything to go by.
