NOW in its eighth year, the highly anticipated Boxer Superstores’ Youth Leadership programme will take place in April 2010. Aimed at offering the youth an opportunity to develop their potential, the company invites youth from all over South Africa and Swaziland to enter the competition and stand a chance to be selected for this life-changing experience.
“The Boxer Youth Leadership programme is one of our flagship projects that we are very proud to host, “says Andrew Mills, marketing director of Boxer Superstores.” The programme is part of our corporate social responsibility initiative, Ubuntu Projects, which is aimed at helping and assisting communities around South Africa and Swaziland. Over the past seven years, we have witnessed how this programme has empowered and developed the leadership skills of the youth who attend and how, in turn, these graduates have positively impacted upon the community in which they live. We see it as an honour to be able to make a tangible difference in the lives of the future leaders of our country.”
Since its inception in 2002, close to 300 youths have participated and successfully completed the Boxer Youth Leadership programme. The programme’s effectiveness is attributed to the professionally constructed content and activities. Added to this, is the post programme assistance and support that is given by the Boxer marketing team.
“We are looking for youth with the X-factor,” says Mzwa Khumalo, Boxer’s Youth Leadership programme team leader who has co-ordinated the course for the past six years. “Youth need to be enthusiastic, passionate and daring. The programme is specially designed to be fun but, at the same time, be given the opportunity to learn important life lessons and improve leadership skills. No experience is needed, but candidates need to be adventurous and willing to take part in the mentally and physically challenging activities.”
The Youth Leadership Programme takes place from 05 April – 10 April 2010 at the Seula Zimbili Adventure Camp in Zinkwazi, KwaZulu-Natal. Those selected will have a chance to participate in a host of fun and physically challenging tasks such as abseiling, rock-climbing, fuffi-sliding, high ropes and much more. There are also a variety of talks and discussions on life skills, career opportunities and leadership.
As part of the selection process for the course, learners between the ages of 16 and 18 are invited to participate in an essay writing competition. Entrants should write an essay of no more than 500 words on the following topic: “As a young person, how would you ensure that the gains brought by the Soccer World Cup are sustained and will continue to benefit Mzanzi after the soccer event.” The entry forms are available at any Boxer Superstores branch. Essays need to be submitted to the store manager by no later than 20 February 2010.
Once essays have been read by a selection panel, they go into a further selection process in which qualifying finalists will go to the relevant store to meet the store manager for an interview. Winners will join forty other young people from around the country on the programme in April. Participants’ transport, accommodation and food during this time, and the course, will be fully paid for by Boxer Superstores.
