THE South Coast Fever congratulates Dr. Siyabonga Cwele on his appointment to President Motlanthe’s cabinet, and Ms. Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge for being promoted to Deputy Speaker of Parliament. We are proud of you for being members of our community. Besides being a medical doctor, Dr. Cwele has distinguished himself as a hardworking and competent Parliamentarian. He is a very popular appointment as Minister of Intelligence.
Ms. Madlala-Routledge proved last year that she was no pushover when as Deputy Minister of Health she crossed swords with the then Minister of Health Manto Tshabalala-Msimang over what she regarded as the government’s deficient HIV Aids policy and bad hospital management. For her efforts she was fired by President Mbeki but lauded by many for her courageous stance.
We wish them well in their new posts. They are bound to make a huge difference in the quality of our government, and it is high time that more people of their ilk be promoted into high government office. There are still far too many pieces of political deadwood drifting around the corridors of power.
Another politician deserving to be congratulated is the new Speaker of the Hibiscus Coast Council, Cllr. Ronnie Nair. He too is a very popular choice and somebody who has shown that there is no substitute for dedication and hard work. We wish you well, Mr. Speaker, and are convinced that the HCM will benefit from your obvious talent for service delivery.

Pebble in my Boot

As somebody who spent some time in the press galleries of various parliaments, I have a reasonable idea of whether a Speaker is competent or not.
