Adam Kok was born on 16th October 1811 and the squabble starts at the very issue of celebrating his birthday, at all. In the one corner of the ring, squaring up for the fight, is Gabriel Marais, Chairman of the Griqua Traditional council and development committee. He and his followers propose to hold a memorial service and will go to pray on Mount Currie, “as the Bible says you must rejoice when somebody dies and your heart must be sore when somebody is born because he or she is born into a sinful world.”

In the other corner is Cyril George Gangerdine, who claims to be a Paramount Chief of the Griquas and insists that the concept of celebrating a dead person “is alien to our culture. Celebrations are only meant for Jesus - this is funny” says Gangerdine, who accuses Marais of “imposing Afrikaner customs on his nation and making money out of the Griquas”. Marais himself is on the board of Trustees of the Kokstad Museum, which is “dominated by Afrikaners” he claims.

Adding to the controversy is a recently launched book entitled “Children of the mist”
and purporting to record the history of the Griquas. Gangardine dismisses the author, Australian Balson Scott as “knowing nothing about the history of the Griquas. The guy is undermining us, by titling the book, Children of the mist-meaning we, the Griquas, do not exist because, mist, is something that doesn’t exist” says Gangerdine.

Marais responds that Gangerdine does not know his roots or background and is misleading the nation and he labels Gangerdine as a stubborn failure. “He has failed to achieve everything he tries to organise, which why he is like this” said Marais. “He claims to be a leader but why does he not attend Griqua meetings to meet some other leaders? We invited him to the meeting on Sunday and we know he won’t be there ” said Marais. He added that “there is no other Paramount Chief of the Griquas, except Adam Kok, who died in 1875. If Gangerdine claims to be a Griqua Chief, he must come to Sunday Church meeting and tell us who crowned him” says Marais to which Gangerdine replies that the Sunday meeting “has no agenda.”

Wayne Abroue had this to say about the article:

Dear sir

It is with interest that we learn of this mudslinging exercise via the media, As a representative of the Griqua community and  of our  ´ Volks President´ A . Le Fleur.

I would like to make the following comments.

As an aquaintance of both parties I can say that they both have the advancement of the Griqua people at heart.

Unfortunately, because our people have been oppressed and continue to be with the new dispensation, our people have resorted to hardline tactics to solve our problems.

Mr Gangerdine has been thanklessly busy for years trying to secure our land back from the oppressors, for which I believe he needs all the support we can muster. This does not make him a paramount chief nor does he percieve to be one.

On the other hand Mr Marais and his commitee are doing a great job trying to unite the griqua nation, unfortunately  trying to break down  people does not always create unity.

As for Mr Scott Balson , I can´t comment because we were not even invited to the books launch in Kranshoek.

I do have to agree that calling the book " children of the mist" is a tad obscure and could be seen as derogatory.

Once again this shows us that we must stand up and train our own youth to document our history and guard our intellectual property and publish these books ourselves, instead of lucrative book deals going to outsiders.

To Griqua readers,  let it be known that there is a  huge Griqua Volk revival campaign  been initiated in all corners of our country,  So please make contact with us so that we can direct you to your nearest point.

To the leaders in Kokstad, please refrain from publishing derogatory remarks about other Griquas via the media, this is not only degrading to the person but Also to the entire Griqua Nation.

Yours in Volklikheid

Wayne Abroue

East Griqualand Fever Editorial Comment

At first glance our front page story may seem like a non-event. Or a publicity stunt dreamed up by a minority leader who some regard as non-representative of his own people. Whether that is so or not, is not for this paper to judge.
