Name: Desiree Terblanche
Position:
Zululand Editor-in-Chief
Bio
Desiree Terblanche is the editor-in-chief of the Zululand Fever and a shareholder in Zululand media; part of Media 24 and the Witness Group of papers. She has been published locally, regionally, nationally and internationally and in 2004 was named a new literary voice in South Africa after winning the FairLady/CNA New Writer competition. Terblanche started her journalism training at a community newspaper in 1992 and has worked as sub-editor and editor on various local publications. She believes that making the world a better place is not naive; it just takes a hell of a lot of work, sassy columns and tons of newsprint. Terblanche has a passion for women empowerment and teaching young women to be emotionally, intellectually and financially astute. She encourages women not to be afraid of thinking big even if they are in small spaces and not to “diss” their communities in search of fame and fortune. She has been nominated for the South African Media Woman of the Year 2008 Award by Editor-in-Chief of the Mail and Guardian, Ferial Haffajee and will appear in the Mail and Guardian publication of South African Women, 100 Hot Young South Africans in the media section. Her passion for research and writing led to her being commissioned to write a comprehensive history spanning 100 years on the establishment and development of one of the oldest farming enterprises in Natal. In her limited spare time Desiree reads, collects books and spends time with her pets at the beach or in the garden.

Upper Coast Fever Journalist
Bio
I was told to write something about myself so the readers would know who they’re dealing with. Not easy. Yes, I too have all sorts of academic qualifications but listing them is boring. I do have a ‘rebel without a cause’ streak, have never found a single cause that I will go to jail for, but if you can convince me you may win me over to write passionately about your cause. Further, I´ll let others speak for me. A reader of the previous newspaper I worked for down in the Cape recently wrote on Facebook that there has been a noticeable decline of the quality of the written language of that newspaper since I left. All my photos on display at the first photographic exhibition that I took part in sold out on the first night. When life gets me down a friend reminds me that I am the girl who has climbed around on scaffolding at a construction site in high heels (on more than one occasion). In her eyes that makes me fearless. So that is what I bring to this blog. All I´m hoping to achieve is to get people reading, thinking and talking (or rather typing!).
